This is a bit of a change from the usual birds and it has been very cleverly carved out of one piece of Laburnum (Laburnum anagyroides). The piece of wood used is a round section of a branch. Laburnum has a very distinct difference in colour between the heart wood and sapwood. The carver has made use of this to carve the head and tail of the stoat sticking out of a hollow tree stump. The stoat is carved from the dark brown heartwood whilst the hollow trunk is in the creamy coloured sapwood approx. 8 inches long by 2 inches in diameter.
Ralph Williams has devoted the last 20 years of his life to wood sculpture and the quality of his work shows his skill and dedication in the smallest detail
